Hailed as a gifted conductor with refined baton technique and mature musicality, Daniel GyuSeo Lee is regarded as the most prominent young conductor on the current music scene. After he studied conducting, composition and musicology in Seoul, currently he is living in Vienna and expanding his career in Europe. He has worked with major European orchestras such as the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra and has been invited by many significant Korean major stages since his overwhelming debut at the age of 20 at the Seoul Arts Center and at 22 with the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2019, Korean historical arts magazine GAEKSUK(Auditorium) chose him as the conductor who will lead the future podium in 2019. In 2020, he was named the Rising Star representing the classical music field by magazine Noblesse.

 

Lee organized the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul(OES) in 2014 and has solidified its presence on the national stage. To date, he has received critical acclaim for concerts in high level, collaborating with prestigious artists such as Bomsori Kim, Yeol Eum Son, Chloe Jiyeong Mun and Zia Shin, while changing the musical landscape of Korea which has led by major symphony orchestras. From 2018, Lee and his orchestra are working on the Complete Beethoven Symphonies & Piano Concertos Cycle, the first as a private orchestra in the Korean music history with the leading pianists at the Seoul Arts Center. An exclusive recording artist for NCM Klassik since 2017, recent releases include Mozart Symphony No. 29 & String Serenade, and Beethoven Symphony No. 3 (2021), all with the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul.

 

With a keen interest in discovering and highlighting potential new music, he is also working with professional contemporary music ensembles such as Ensemble TIMF(Tongyeong Isang-Yun International Music Festival) and Contemporary Music Orchestra of National Center for Music Korea. He has also committed to the activation of local music scenes through his role as Principal Guest Conductor of the National Solisten comprised of members of the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra from the 2019/20 season. Moreover, he is also dedicated to social contributions through music. He has been conscious of social issues around the world, arranging charity concerts to raise awareness and funds to support humanitarian aid and human rights for children in need.

 

Lee first took up the violin at the age of five and made his debut as a soloist with the Seoul Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. He served as the concertmaster of his regional youth orchestra for nearly a decade, and still in his youth, he began to study conducting on his own based on his experiences as a concertmaster. At the College of Music at Seoul National University, he studied with professor Hun-Joung Lim and received Masters degree at the same graduate school under professor YunSung Chang. At the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna(MDW), he is studying with professor Simeon Pironkoff. He has been also taught by Maestros such as Marin Alsop, Riccardo Muti, Tadaaki Otaka, David Robertson and Andrés Orozco-Estrada. He is the recipient of the Award for the Remarkable Artist of the Year 2018 awarded by the Committee of Korean Arts Critics.
