Gyu-Seo Lee

 

Gyu-Seo Lee studied conducting and composition at the Seoul National University. Hailed as a gifted conductor with refined baton technique, mature musicality and wide repertoire, he is regarded as a representative conductor of the next generation of Korea. Since his overwhelming debut at the age of 22 with the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, he has conducted Korea's leadingorchestras. In 2018, he received an <Award for the Remarkable Artist of the Year> presented by the Committee of Korean Arts Critics and in 2019, he was selected as the 9 conductors who will brighten up the future podium by the most authoritative arts magazine GAEKSUK(Auditorium).

 

In 2014, he organized the Orchestral Ensemble Seoul(OES) with his colleagues active in Europe and has solidified its presence on the national stage. To date, leading this chamber orchestra as the co-founder and the artistic director, he has received critical acclaim for his concerts of the highest level in collaboration with prestigious artists at home and abroad, while changing the musical landscape of Korea which has led by established symphony orchestras. From 2018 to 2020, Lee and his orchestra are embarking upon the complete "Beethoven Symphonies & Piano Concertos Cycle" with the leading Korean pianists at the Seoul Arts Center. Since 2019, he has contributed to the activation of local chamber music as the Chief Guest Conductor of the National Solisten comprised of members of the Gwangju Philharmonic Orchestra. With a keen interest in discovering and highlighting significant modern music, he is also working with professional contemporary music ensembles such as Ensemble TIMF and National Contemporary Music Orchestra of Gugak Center Korea.

 

Gyu-Seo Lee first took up the violin at the age of five and made his debut as a violinist with the Seoul Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. He served as the concertmaster of his regional youth orchestra for nearly a decade, and still in his youth, he began to teach himself to conduct based on his experiences as a concertmaster. At the College of Music at SNU, he studied with famous professor Hun-Joung Lim and finished his further studies at the same college with professor YunSung Chang. Recently, he and his orchestra made its debut album "Mozart: Symphony No. 29 & String Serenade" released by NCM Klassik in 2018. Moreover, he is also dedicated to social contributions through music. He has been conscious of social issues around the world, arranging charity concerts to raise awareness and funds to support humanitarian aid and human rights for children in need.
